Hear from our Past Student Volunteers

“One of the many perks of being an SV is having your portfolio reviewed not only by your fellow volunteers but by industry professionals who offer to give advice to students. When I got called for my portfolio review, I didn’t expect a company from Japan to be reviewing my work. It ended up being quite a life-changing experience since they offered to keep in touch while I finished my studies, shortly before graduating they offered me a job, and I started my life in Tokyo a few months after that,”

– Thibault Tresca, Director and 3D Animator, AKA Virtual, Japan

“Volunteering at SIGGRAPH Asia is opening yourself up to like-minded creatives that share your interests and speak the same digital language as you. It’s a lot about exposing yourself to butterfly effects—for me, I became friends with Shaun in Sydney last year, and we ended up collaborating on my thesis animated short. In an increasingly disconnected world, I realize these student volunteer trips have translated into my fondest memories :)”

– Wei Liea, Graduate, ADM, Nanyang Technological University (Media Arts), Singapore

“My first SIGGRAPH Asia experience was in 2018 Tokyo. I keep coming back since then because it strengthens my industry knowledge and expands my network!

SIGGRAPH Asia showcases cutting-edge industry RD and inspiring ideas for me to fine-tune my career path. Listening to industry sharing, watching VFX showreels and animation, visiting the Art Gallery and Emerging Technologies booths… too many things to do in too little time!

Networking is part of the success. The SV community is the place that I love the most. I have met many international passionate friends and talented researchers with a heart for helping each other. A few of them become long-term friends and we even visit each other’s countries. A life-changing story: I entered a world-famous university in Singapore as a Master’s student thanks to one of the SVs who introduced me to his professor!”

– Zhang Tianyi, Master Graduate, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

“As my first SV experience, SIGGRAPH Asia was a refreshing and enjoyable finale to the year where meaningful connections and better friendships were made. It is also a perfect opportunity to see the world in a greatly fulfilling manner!

Especially as a greenhorn, I initially did not know what to expect at all but my worries were quickly dispelled by an extremely welcoming team of amicable leaders and fellow SVs! The overall level of professionalism brought about a pleasantly fun and smooth-sailing event as well, with ample time to pick up the ropes. Another benefit that I truly appreciated was access to inspiring and informative events to foster my fresh career into the industry. And how can I not mention about that post-SIGGRAPH Asia after-party?

It definitely convinced me to join in for future volunteering, be it as a TL or SV once again. With this year’s event in Tokyo, the decision was a no-brainer and I can’t wait to see what more I can see and the kinds of people I’ll have the pleasure to meet!”

– Darrell, Undergraduate, DigiPen Institute of Technology, Singapore

“At SIGGRAPH Asia, I made lifelong friends through sharing cultural differences and spending precious time together. We always cherished the moment when we worked as a team. It drastically changed my perspective that being with others is better than being alone.”

– Juve, Master's Student, DigiPen Institute of Technology, Thailand

“The SV program gave me the opportunity to meet many people from around the world and making lifelong friends. Being able to share stories with people broaden my horizons, understanding of how different people lived. It is also cool to see what everyone’s journey in their study especially seeing them year after year with progress from studying to finding work.

I had such a good time when SIGGRAPH Asia came to my local city SYDNEY. I was able to show my friends the best place to hang out and some tourist destinations.

SIGGRAPH Asia is a good way to make many friends.”

– Sandra Trinh, Programmer, Liquid Cat Studios, Australia

“Volunteering for SIGGRAPH Asia has equipped me with valuable soft skills, including communication, problem-solving, networking, teamwork, and collaboration. It has opened opportunities to connect with my university peers and extended my network overseas for outreach programs. I am excited about our project to visit orphanages and lead outreach activities in Nepal or Cambodia this year or next year. :)””
