Wētā FX takes on Alien: Romulus
DescriptionRavenous extraterrestrials and planetary chaos was the foundation of Wētā FX's work in the upcoming instalment in the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus. In this talk, VFX Supervisor Daniel Macarin, and Effects Supervisor Michael Chrobak, will walk through the process for bringing the claustrophobic sci-fi horror to life - embracing the anxiety inducing tone of the original films as a new team of space colonizers take on the Xenomorph.

The team worked closely with the filmmakers to ensure the Directors vision was honored. Each shot was anchored in a sense of realism, with the team taking an almost practical-effects outlook to guide the cinematography and creature work for this epic space adventure. Daniel and Micheal will discuss the important work artists do to preserve plate photography and honor the onset and DOP teams, exploring the artistry behind making every visual effect invisible.

Without reference material, the team had to take into account real physics to achieve the large-scale destruction sequences, and the uniquely horrifying problems only encountered in outer-space. The team will explore how research was essential in finding the balance between the beautiful and the destructive.
