Art Papers Theme: Weaving the Future

In an era of profound transformation—shaped by instability, climate crisis, conflict, and rapid shifts in human–machine relations—the negotiation of possible futures has become urgent. Paradigm shifts generate oscillations between hope and panic, expectation and uncertainty, risk and opportunity. At the same time, they open experimental spaces and function as catalysts for speculative practices, and transformative cultural processes.

What roles do art, culture, and technological innovation assume in shaping sustainable futures, and how can interdisciplinary methods, emerging technologies, and historically informed perspectives translate speculative imaginaries into actionable, human-centered trajectories?
The SIGGRAPH Asia Art Paper Program welcomes contributions that critically engage with the intersections of artistic practice, research, and technological innovation. Submissions may be made to one of the following categories:
  • Art & Research
This category invites practice-based and artistically driven research that explores experimental approaches to new technologies, methodologies, and media. Submissions should foreground the artwork, artistic process, or project as a central epistemic component, and may take the form of case studies, documented experiments, or works in progress. Contributions are expected to situate the artistic work within relevant theoretical, historical, or cultural contexts, demonstrating how artistic practice functions as a mode of inquiry and knowledge production.
  • Theory & Criticism
This category focuses on academic research grounded in established scholarly methodologies. Submissions may include empirical studies, analytical investigations, literature reviews, methodological reflections, or theoretical frameworks. Papers should demonstrate methodological rigor, critical engagement with current state-of-the-art research, and a clear contribution to ongoing scholarly discourse in fields related to art, media, culture, and technology.
These papers will be published as part of the proceedings on the ACM Digital Library.

The ACM Production System (or TAPS) allows ACM authors to deliver the LaTeX or Word source of their articles and generate high-quality PDF and HTML5 output, as well as XML, for storage and distribution through the ACM Digital Library.
The introduction of the consolidated ACM article template in 2017 was an important building block for the future of the ACM Digital Library, as it made more consistent the underlying metadata that is a part of an author’s source material – the LaTeX commands and Word styles an author uses in the preparation of their article defines the various parts of their article: the title, the authors, the section headings, and so on. More information on the ACM article template, including links to the templates and “best practices,” can be found at this link.

Paper Length
The differences between the two submission formats are below:

Long Papers
  • Word Count Maximum: 3,500
  • Figure Count Maximum: 10 images
  • Why It Matters, short text, Word Count Maximum: 100 words

Short Papers
  • Word Count Maximum: 2,500
  • Figure Count Maximum: 5 images
  • Why It Matters, short text, Word Count Maximum: 100 words

All contributors to SIGGRAPH Asia Annual Conferences are now required to use ACM’s rights management system to grant rights to publish accepted content rather than through the SIGGRAPH Asia Submission System. Essentially, submission tracking, jury review, and acceptance remain the same, but now the rights management is through ACM, the parent organization of SIGGRAPH Asia.
You will be asked to complete an ACM rights management form, which includes permission to record and distribute the audio and video of your recorded presentation through official channels of ACM/SIGGRAPH Asia. For most content types, this will be a Permission and Release form, which allows authors to retain copyright.
As a contributor to an ACM-sponsored event, the following expectations apply to you, should your content be accepted for presentation:
  • You have the permission to use everything that is in your presentation. This includes securing permission to use third-party material, and providing documentation of that permission to ACM.(More Information On The Proper Use Of Third-Party Material In Your Presentation)
  • If you are using copyrighted musical compositions in your presentation, you must secure performing rights licenses.
  • You must have the authority to grant ACM the right to distribute your presentation.
Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution.
Please kindly ensure that at least one contributor or author is present during your designated presentation slot during SIGGRAPH Asia 2026. Do keep your schedules available from 1 to 4 December 2026. More details will be shared by November 2026.
Submitters will receive acceptance and rejection notices via email. Detailed information and instructions will then be sent to submitters along with the acceptance letter.
Presenter and Contributor Recognition
Presenters / Contributors of each accepted submission must register for at least one conference pass. Please visit our registration page to view the various registration categories for each program.
Please see the Recognition Benefits for a summary of what you will receive if your work and/or proposal are accepted by SIGGRAPH Asia 2026.
Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution. You will be required to prepare the final print-ready file following the specifications in the acceptance notification.
Publication
All work selected for the SIGGRAPH Asia Art Paper will also be documented in the SIGGRAPH Asia website and ACM Digital Library.
Other Details
You will be able to update your basic submission information so that it can be included in the conference program and website. This information needs to be finalized two weeks after acceptance.
Important Update on ACM’s New Open Access Publishing Model for 2026 ACM Conferences!
Starting 1 January 2026, ACM will fully transition to Open Access. All ACM publications, including those from ACM-sponsored conferences, will be 100% Open Access. Authors will have two primary options for publishing Open Access articles with ACM: the ACM Open institutional model or by paying Article Processing Charges (APCs). With over 2,600 institutions already part of ACM Open, the majority of ACM-sponsored conference papers will not require APCs from authors or conferences (currently, around 76%).
Authors from institutions not participating in ACM Open will need to pay an APC to publish their papers, unless they qualify for a financial waiver. To find out whether an APC applies to your article, please consult the list of participating institutions in ACM Open and review the https://www.acm.org/publications/policies/policy-on-discretionary-open-access-apc-waivers. Keep in mind that waivers are rare and are granted based on specific criteria set by ACM.
Understanding that this change could present financial challenges, ACM has approved a temporary subsidy for 2026 to ease the transition and allow more time for institutions to join ACM Open. The subsidy will offer:
  • $250 APC for ACM/SIG members
  • $350 for non-members
This represents a 65% discount, funded directly by ACM. Authors are encouraged to help advocate for their institutions to join ACM Open during this transition period. This temporary subsidized pricing will apply to all conferences scheduled for 2026.
