Joe Takayama began his career as a CGI artist and researcher while studying at Musashino Art University. After graduating, he pursued a Ph.D. at Kyushu University's Graduate School of Design. He then became a visiting scholar at the University of Texas at Dallas in the Arts & Technology Program. Upon returning to Japan, he worked as a research fellow at Kyushu University and a lecturer at Kyushu Sangyo University before the current position. His research focuses on procedural animation and algorithmic art, with some of his works showcased at past SIGGRAPH and SIGGRAPH Asia conferences.
