François Sugny

Biography
François joined Wētā FX in 2009 to work on James Cameron’s Avatar. He was an Associate VFX Supervisor on Avatar: The Way of Water and is currently working on Avatar: Fire & Ash due to be released in 2025.
François has also worked on a swathe of other high-profile Wētā projects. He was in the FX department for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy and was a CG Supervisor on Steven Spielberg’s The BFG and on Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2.
He has recently been instrumental in two projects where water was at the forefront of Wētā’s contribution, Nyad and the acclaimed Netflix series Ripley, which won him a Visual Effects Emmy Award in 2024. He has been nominated multiple times for a Visual Effects Society Award and won the award for his work on Avatar: The Way of Water.
While at Dreamworks Animation in Los Angeles, François added iconic films like Kung Fu Panda and Monsters vs Aliens to his credit list.
François was born in Grenoble, in the foothills of the French Alps, where he did his studies on computer science and image processing before proceeding to go and work for different visual effects studios across the United Stated and Australia before settling in New Zealand at Wētā FX.
