Art Gallery Theme: Starting with Spinning
SIGGRAPH Asia 2026 takes inspiration from batik, Malaysia’s traditional textile, and adopts the theme “Weaving the Future.” Every textile begins as fiber—spun into yarn. For this exhibition, we gather artworks that begin at that origin: works born from the act of spinning—creating from raw conceptual, technical, or cultural fibers.
Around the time SIGGRAPH began—and even earlier—computer graphics were far more constrained than it is today. To break through those creative limits, artists wrote their own code, built their own devices, and used hacking and tinkering to make what did not yet exist become real. In doing so, they also shaped new concepts and ways of thinking—defining not only how such works could be made, but what computer-based art itself could be. Their practice resembled the long arc of textile-making—not only in process, but in its necessity to construct each layer from raw material: selecting fibers, twisting yarn, weaving cloth, and tailoring a garment. In those works, there is a universality that crosses time—something that, even now, does not feel dated.
Today, computer-based expressions have become easier to produce than ever. With generative AI and off-the-shelf devices, polished results can be created with speed. The more immediately “readable” a work is, the more quickly it circulates across social media as short-form video. Like fast fashion made from synthetic fibers, this acceleration makes works abundant, yet often fleeting. Yet works made in this way can become difficult to remember even a year later.
That is precisely why this exhibition turns its attention to digital art that feels as though it was made by returning to the fiber level—the act of spinning a single strand. It is work that returns to a pioneer’s spirit, the impulse to bring something into being from the ground up. The thread may be aesthetic, technological, social, or cultural; we leave that point of departure to each artist. We impose no restrictions on form: computationally created still images or moving images; installations or performances that engage with information environments; expanded sculpture such as kinetic art or robot art; and crafts realized through digital fabrication, among others.
What we seek to follow closely is why a particular subject or material was chosen, how it was tested, and what failures or detours shaped the work into its final form. In tracing these paths, we hope that these singular works—emerging from each artist’s trial and error, and arriving from outside the familiar—will unsettle and renew how we see the world, and how we interact with it.

3 programs have overlapping scope
  • Art Gallery
  • Emerging Technologies
  • XR
Below, we highlight features of each program that help submitters to decide which program to submit to. However, for some works, it may not be possible to clearly decide the best-fitting program.
In that case, we encourage submitters to:
Then, the program chairs will decide which program this work best fits in and only judge it in that category.
Distinguishing Features of Each Program
  • Art Gallery
    • This program seeks artworks that use computational methods or critically engage with today’s information environment. We will evaluate both the artistic impact and the concepts and technical approach behind the work. Please submit your work as an artwork, not as a technical demo or a design presentation.
  • Emerging Technologies
    • Place for innovative technologies that provides novel experiences
    • Often features new hardware devices that cannot be purchased
    • Works usually focus on technology with design/artistic intent being secondary
    • “Maker” mentality
  • XR
    • Features novel AR / VR/ MR prototype systems and/or innovative content with off-the-shelf consumer products and software such as Unity or the Unreal Engine
    • Works also focus on novelty of the technology with design/artistic intent
    • Submissions with scientific focus are also acceptable
Submissions with scientific focus are also acceptable, e.g., sophisticated redirect touching algorithms with standard hardware.

Selections will be made by a panel of digital art experts according to the following criteria:

  • The overall artistic impact of the work
  • Its relevance to the call for submissions
  • The clarity and quality of the accompanying artist statement
  • The creative use of media and/or the depth of critical inquiry, with particular attention to contributions in graphic and interactive techniques
Due to limitations of the exhibition venue space, works may be not accepted regardless of their quality (this does not mean that smaller works are more likely to be accepted).

All contributors to SIGGRAPH Asia Annual Conferences are now required to use ACM’s rights management system to grant rights to publish accepted content rather than through the SIGGRAPH Asia Submission System. Essentially, submission tracking, jury review, and acceptance remain the same, but now the rights management is through ACM, the parent organization of SIGGRAPH Asia.
You will be asked to complete an ACM rights management form, which includes permission to record and distribute the audio and video of your recorded presentation through official channels of ACM/SIGGRAPH Asia. For most content types, this will be a Permission and Release form, which allows authors to retain copyright
As a contributor to an ACM-sponsored event, the following expectations apply to you, should your content be accepted for presentation:
  • You have the permission to use everything that is in your presentation. This includes securing permission to use third-party material, and providing documentation of that permission to ACM.(More Information On The Proper Use Of Third-Party Material In Your Presentation)
  • If you are using copyrighted musical compositions in your presentation, you must secure performing rights licenses.
  • You must have the authority to grant ACM the right to distribute your presentation.
Once your contribution is accepted, you will receive a link via email to the appropriate form for your contribution.

Artwork

Q1. What type of artwork is acceptable for submission?

The SIGGRAPH Asia 2026 Art Gallery welcomes creative works in any form, whether informational or material, as long as the work can be experienced by SIGGRAPH Asia attendees and aligns with the exhibition theme and evaluation criteria.
For works such as projects, platforms, or communities where the experience of the artwork itself cannot be directly conveyed on site, please submit them to the Art Papers Program instead.

Q2. Can I submit a video documenting my work?

Videos are a key material for evaluation, and to ensure a fair review process, a video submission is required even for static works. Please submit a video that clearly shows how the work will be installed in the venue and how visitors will view and/or interact with it. For video art works, please submit a digest (excerpt) of the main piece, within 3 minutes, that conveys its content.
The video should be produced carefully and in a restrained manner, serving as documentation that communicates the work’s scale, behavior, structure, and relationship with the audience. Highly stylized edits or promotional treatments (e.g., dramatic/cinematic presentation) are not necessary.

Q3. Is digital video art accepted?

Yes, submissions are eligible if they make significant creative use of digital techniques to transform video, incorporate computer animation, or meaningfully engage with the aesthetic issues outlined in the Art Gallery Call for Submission. Please note that SIGGRAPH also hosts the Computer Animation Festival. If your work is intended to be screened in a theater-like environment, we recommend submitting it to that program instead.

Q4. Is SIGGRAPH Asia accepting sculptures?

Yes, sculptures that are kinetic, interactive, robotic, electronic, or part of an installation are encouraged. Works that utilize rapid prototyping, that make use of embedded systems or combine traditional media with digital systems are also welcome.

Q5. Can I submit the same piece to multiple programs?

You can only submit your work to one of the Experience Hall programs (Art Gallery, E-Tech, and XR).

Submission Process

Q1. Where do I send my submission materials?

All work must be submitted via the SIGGRAPH Asia Art Gallery Online Submission Form. Do not send printed proposals or slides in physical form through the mail.

Q2. Can I submit work that I’ve published, presented, or has been accepted for publication or presentation elsewhere?

Yes, with some conditions. Works that have been shown in competitions, exhibitions, or art festivals may be submitted, provided that you clearly indicate any prior presentation in the submission form and describe when and where the work was shown. Please note that audiences and jurors expect to encounter works that offer a fresh experience. The selection panel will consider whether the work demonstrates sufficient novelty, impact, and contextual relevance, regardless of prior presentation.
However, works that have been presented at major international academic conferences or published in formal academic proceedings are generally not eligible and should not be submitted. This program is intended to foreground artistic practice rather than works already established within academic conference contexts.
Applicants are also asked to ensure that all submitted materials are prepared specifically for this call and its exhibition format.

Q3. How many pieces can I submit to the SIGGRAPH Asia Art Gallery?

There is no limit. Submit as many as you like. But you must complete and submit a separate submission form for each work unless your work is a series (see below).

Q4. If my work is a series, how should I submit it?

You should submit all pieces of the series under the one submission form. Please also indicate the required installation space in the floorplan.

Q5. Can I submit a detail of my artwork along with the image?

Yes.

Q6. Will you accept my work without an artist’s statement?

No. Submissions without an artist’s statement cannot be completed in the submission system and will not be considered for review. All submissions must include a publishable, proofread artist’s statement written in English.

Q7. Can I submit a URL rather than images of my work?

No. You must submit images of your work so that we can publish an image of your work. You may submit a URL so that we can get additional information about your work if needed.

Upon Acceptance

Q1. What will SIGGRAPH Asia support if the project is accepted?

  • Event Management
  • Venue design and basic infrastructure
  • Exhibition Design including a poster description of your accepted work
  • Basic facilities *Based on approval and discussion between Organizers & Submitters (E.g., General pedestal, lighting, electricity, basic wi-fi)

Q4. Audio Visual

You will be responsible for your own Audio-Visual equipment. An AV rental list will be provided to you upon acceptance.
SIGGRAPH Asia offers basic in-hall Wi-Fi. Please specify the services you require for your installation. High-speed internet can be arranged upon request, subject to additional charges.

Q5. Will SIGGRAPH Asia pay for any duty or taxes on international shipments?

No. You are responsible for all import and export expenses

Q6. Does SIGGRAPH Asia have funding to ship my equipment to the conference?

At The Conference

Q1. If I show my work at SIGGRAPH Asia, will I have to watch my equipment?

Yes. You will need to have enough people to watch your installation or art piece if it requires monitoring.

Q2. Do I need to install my own work?

We will work closely with you to ensure proper and effective installation of your work. The exhibition organizers will prepare the overall exhibition environment. The installation of the artwork itself will be carried out by the artist. Since installation time is limited, artists exhibiting large-scale or technically complex works are strongly encouraged to arrange additional assistance. You may plan ahead for your travel to Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) for set up and installation on 1 December 2026.

Q3. Will SIGGRAPH Asia pay for my accommodation and travel expenses?

No. You are responsible for your own expenses.

Q4. Can I get request help from Student Volunteers to help me operate my equipment?

No. The main form of presentation in the Art Gallery venue is a live demonstration, which will be available throughout the conference. You are responsible for ensuring that your demonstration is manned during all opening hours of the Art Gallery area.

If the booth is left unwatched for prolonged periods, contributors will risk having their accepted work revoked and removed from ACM Digital Library and SIGGRAPH Asia.

Please kindly note that if you require additional assistance to watch and operate your equipment or art piece during exhibition hours, contributors shall arrange for additional manpower prior to the event. There will not be dedicated Student Volunteers assigned to your booth(s).
