SUMMARY:Plumes and Pixels: Bridging Digital and Traditional Art in SciArt
 Education
DESCRIPTION:Educator's Forum\n\nEmil Polyak; Kathi Martin; Rghad Balkhyoor
; Arefeh Ahmadi; Darren Woodland, Jr.; and Varun Mahadev (Drexel Universit
y)\n\nThis paper presents the innovative "Plumes and Pixels" project, whic
h employs 3D Gaussian Splatting to create an interactive digital twin of a
vintage bird of paradise headwear. This cutting-edge technique, particula
rly effective for challenging subjects like feathers, demonstrates the pro
ject's potential as a powerful teaching tool in SciArt, bridging digital t
echniques, natural sciences, and artistic expression. The approach uniquel
y reverses the traditional inspiration flow between digital and traditiona
l art, with students producing non-digital artworks inspired by advanced d
igital processes and scientific concepts. This oscillation between digital
and physical realms encourages exploration beyond pixels, fostering renew
ed appreciation for materiality and scientific observation. The process cu
ltivates a mental creativity cycle where insights from traditional techniq
ues inform students' digital practice. Curriculum modules leverage this Sc
iArt-inspired digital-to-traditional art cycle, examining challenges and o
pportunities of integrating advanced technological projects within artisti
c education. The paper highlights impacts on student engagement and learni
ng outcomes across scientific and artistic domains. By sharing these exper
iences, including a successful art exhibition of students' traditionally c
reated works, we aim to inspire a shift in SciArt and digital media educat
ion. The approach demonstrates how synergy between scientific inquiry, dig
ital innovation, and traditional craftsmanship leads to holistic learning
experiences, advocating for an educational philosophy transcending the sci
ence-art dichotomy.\n\nRegistration Category: Enhanced Access, Full Access
