SUMMARY:Crafting AR Lanterns: Future Practice to Preserve the Past
DESCRIPTION:Courses\n\nQuynh Nhu Bui and Lucian Rodriguez Lovell (RMIT Uni
versity)\n\nIntangible cultural heritage is being threatened by forces of
aggressive urbanization and globalization, particularly in developing nati
ons like Vietnam. UNESCO defines intangible cultural heritage as encompass
ing oral traditions, social practices, rituals, festive events, traditiona
l craft skills, childhood play, and food-making traditions.\n\nThis worksh
op is based on “Play to Preserve the Past”, a series of mobile games, crea
ted by the researcher, that investigate Augment Reality (AR) technology as
a potential future solution to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.
The series investigates the potentials creative practitioners can harness
when preserving ICH with AR, and the appropriateness of using advanced to
ols to preserve heritage, exposing any impacts they might have on the pres
erved content.\n\nIn this workshop “Crafting AR Lanterns: Future Practice
to Preserve the Past” the Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival serves as
a provocation for ICH preservation of the future, asking “How do we prese
rve physical lantern crafting practices in a digitally dominated future?”.
\n\nThe workshop will guide participants through an exploratory lantern de
coration practice, bridging contemporary 3D digital art and hand-craft pra
ctices. Attendees will learn to integrate their lanterns into an AR system
using SparkAR, design simple games to play with their lanterns, and take
part in a mixed-reality lantern parade.\n\nBy fostering a creative dialogu
e between tradition, technological innovation, and contemporary creative p
ractice, the workshop will provoke discussions on the preservation of cult
ural practices in the age of digital transformation. Participants will not
only gain practical skills in crafting AR experiences, but also consider
the broader implications of using technology to connect the past and the f
uture. The workshop is an opportunity to engage with critical discussion a
bout intangible cultural heritage whilst creating interactive pieces of ar
t that preserve and celebrate our collective past.\n\nRegistration Categor
