SUMMARY:Crafting AR Lanterns: Future Practice to Preserve the Past
DESCRIPTION:Quynh Nhu Bui and Lucian Rodriguez Lovell (RMIT University)\n\
nIntangible cultural heritage is being threatened by forces of aggressive
urbanization and globalization, particularly in developing nations like Vi
etnam. UNESCO defines intangible cultural heritage as encompassing oral tr
aditions, social practices, rituals, festive events, traditional craft ski
lls, childhood play, and food-making traditions.\n\nThis workshop is based
on “Play to Preserve the Past”, a series of mobile games, created by the
researcher, that investigate Augment Reality (AR) technology as a potentia
l future solution to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. The series
investigates the potentials creative practitioners can harness when prese
rving ICH with AR, and the appropriateness of using advanced tools to pres
erve heritage, exposing any impacts they might have on the preserved conte
nt.\n\nIn this workshop “Crafting AR Lanterns: Future Practice to Preserve
the Past” the Vietnamese Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival serves as a provocat
ion for ICH preservation of the future, asking “How do we preserve physica
l lantern crafting practices in a digitally dominated future?”.\n\nThe wor
kshop will guide participants through an exploratory lantern decoration pr
actice, bridging contemporary 3D digital art and hand-craft practices. Att
endees will learn to integrate their lanterns into an AR system using Spar
kAR, design simple games to play with their lanterns, and take part in a m
 ixed-reality lantern parade.\n\nBy fostering a creative dialogue between t
radition, technological innovation, and contemporary creative practice, th
e workshop will provoke discussions on the preservation of cultural practi
ces in the age of digital transformation. Participants will not only gain
practical skills in crafting AR experiences, but also consider the broader
implications of using technology to connect the past and the future. The
workshop is an opportunity to engage with critical discussion about intang
ible cultural heritage whilst creating interactive pieces of art that pres
erve and celebrate our collective past.\n\nRegistration Category: Full Acc
ess, Full Access Supporter\n\nLanguage Format: English Language\n\n
