SUMMARY:The Endless Possibilities of a Piece of Cloth
DESCRIPTION:Yoshiyuki Miyamae (Miyake Design Studio, Designer of A-POC ABL
E ISSEY MIYAKE)\n\nThis speech is organized into four parts.\n\nPart 1 dis
cusses the affinity between textiles and computers.\nThe relationship betw
een textiles and computers has evolved through mutual influence over the c
ourse of technological history. The concept of digital control, which orig
inated with the Jacquard loom, became a part of computer design philosophy
and significantly influenced the development of digital technology. Today
, computer technology is integral to textile design and production, and th
e two fields remain closely intertwined. It also plays an essential role i
 n A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE’s production process.\n\nPart 2 outlines the his
tory of the brand, A-POC, with a focus on its origins. A-POC, initiated by
Issey Miyake in 1998, was a new approach to manufacturing created by reth
inking and advancing existing production processes in pursuit of the funda
mental concept of “a single piece of cloth”.\n\nPart 3 introduces several
projects in which A-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE, a brand that evolved from A-POC
, collaborated with external specialists of computer technology research a
nd development.\n\nThe final Part 4 presents a live demonstration of cloth
es-making.\nA-POC ABLE ISSEY MIYAKE has revolutionized the process of clot
hing manufacturing by first weaving essential design elements directly int
o a single piece of fabric ― an approach unlike conventional clothes-makin
g methods. To demonstrate this process, the “steam stretch” technique will
be showcased, where the fabric shrinks into origami-like folds when heat
\n\nRegistration Category: Enhanced Access, Full A
