SUMMARY:Measuring Human Motion Under Clothing
DESCRIPTION:Luis Bolanos, Pearson Wyder-Hodge, and Xindong Lin (University
of British Columbia) and Dinesh K. Pai (University of British Columbia, V
ital Mechanics Research)\n\nIn many applications involving clothing, it is
essential to know how clothes move relative to the body hidden beneath. T
his is impossible using traditional optical motion capture methods due to
visual occlusion due to clothes and other body parts, and very difficult u
sing previous non-optical methods that have bulky sensors and poor spatial
accuracy.\n\nWe propose and evaluate a system, Emob, for estimating body
motion under clothing using very small electromagnetic sensors attached di
rectly to the skin. It can also be used to measure the motion of clothing
layers or sensors below the outer layer of clothes. We show how electromag
netic tracking can even be performed inside a full body scanner, combining
high resolution shape measurement with body tracking under clothing. We d
escribe a new calibration procedure that learns to correct the highly non-
linear distortion in electromagnetic sensors to improve accuracy by an ord
er of magnitude compared to recent work. We show that our method is effect
ive and demonstrate several novel applications.\n\nRegistration Category:
