SUMMARY:Actuators A La Mode: Modal Actuations for Soft Body Locomotion
DESCRIPTION:Otman Benchekroun (University of Toronto); Kaixiang Xie (McGil
l University); Hsueh-Ti Derek Liu (Roblox); Eitan Grinspun (University of
Toronto); Sheldon Andrews (Ecole de Technologie Superieure, Roblox); and V
ictor Zordan (Roblox)\n\nTraditional character animation specializes in ch
aracters with a rigidly articulated skeleton and a bipedal/quadripedal mor
phology. This assumption simplifies many aspects for designing physically
based animations, like locomotion, but comes with the price of excluding c
haracters of arbitrary deformable geometries.\nTo remedy this, our framewo
rk makes use of a spatio-temporal actuation subspace built off of the natu
ral vibration modes of the character geometry. \nThe resulting actuation
is coupled to a reduced fast soft body simulation, allowing us to formulat
e a locomotion optimization problem that is tractable for a wide variety o
f high resolution deformable characters.\n\nRegistration Category: Full Ac
cess, Full Access Supporter\n\nLanguage Format: English Language\n\nSessio
n Chair: Hao (Richard) Zhang (Simon Fraser University, Augmenta)\n\n
