SUMMARY:Computational Biomimetics of Winged Seeds
DESCRIPTION:Technical Papers\n\nQiqin Le (Shanghai Qi Zhi Institute); Jiam
u Bu (Tsinghua University); Yanke Qu (Peking University); Bo Zhu (Georgia
Institute of Technology); and Tao Du (Tsinghua University, Shanghai Qi Zhi
Institute)\n\nWe develop a computational pipeline to facilitate the biomi
metic design of winged seeds. Our approach leverages 3D scans of natural w
inged seeds to construct a bio-inspired design space by interpolating them
with geodesic coordinates in the 3D diffeomorphism group. We formulate ae
rodynamic design tasks with probabilistic performance objectives and adapt
a gradient-free optimizer to explore the design space and minimize the ex
pectation of performance objectives efficiently and effectively. Our pipel
ine discovers novel winged seed designs that outperform natural counterpar
ts in aerodynamic tasks, including long-distance dispersal and guided flig
ht. We validate the physical fidelity of our pipeline by showcasing paper
models of selected winged seeds in the design space and reporting their si
milar aerodynamic behaviors in simulation and reality.\n\nRegistration Cat
