SUMMARY:Alignable Lamella Gridshells
DESCRIPTION:Davide Pellis (ISTI-CNR)\n\nAlignable lamella gridshells are 3
D grid structures capable of collapsing into a planar strip. \nThis featur
e significantly simplifies on-site assembly and also ensures compactness f
or efficient transport and storage.\nHowever, designing these structures t
o achieve specific shapes still remains a challenge.\nThis paper tackles t
he inverse design problem of alignable lamella gridshells leveraging conce
pts from differential geometry and Cartan's theory of moving frames.\nThe
study unveils that geodesic alignable gridshells, where lamellae are dispo
sed tangentially to the surface, are limited to forming shapes isometric t
o surfaces of revolution.\nFurthermore, it demonstrates that alignable gri
dshells with lamellae arranged orthogonally to a surface can be can be rea
lized only on a specific class of surfaces that meet a particular curvatur
e condition along their principal curvature lines.\nFinally, drawing on th
ese theoretical findings, this work introduces novel computational tools t
ailored for the design of these structures.\n\nRegistration Category: Full
