SUMMARY:Perceptual error optimization for Monte Carlo animation rendering
DESCRIPTION:Miša Korać (Saarland University, DFKI); Corentin Salaün (Max P
lanck Institute for Informatics); Iliyan Georgiev (Adobe); Pascal Grittman
n (Saarland University); Philipp Slusallek (Saarland University, DFKI); an
d Karol Myszkowski and Gurprit Singh (Max Planck Institute for Informatics
)\n\nIndependently estimating individual pixel values in Monte Carlo rende
ring results in a perceptually sub-optimal white-noise distribution of err
or in image space. Recent works have shown that perceptual fidelity can be
improved significantly by distributing pixel error as blue noise instead.
Most such works have focused on static images, ignoring the temporal perc
eptual effects of animation display. We extend prior formulations to simul
taneously consider the spatial and temporal domains, and perform an analys
is to motivate a perceptually better spatio-temporal error distribution. W
e then propose a practical error optimization algorithm for spatio-tempora
l rendering and demonstrate its effectiveness in various configurations.\n
