Demoscene and XR

SessionDemoscene
DescriptionThe demoscene's relationship to new technologies is ambivalent, especially since it often involves pushing and exceeding the limits of established platforms beyond what is considered possible.
XR technologies, and particularly VR, immediately lend themselves to consuming traditional three-dimensional demos, but there is often the prejudice that they are just commercial hype or overly mainstream.
Generally, creating stunning audio-visual content with a minimal footprint is both practically close and --at least in terms of effect-- a common goal with most XR content producers, be it commercial or independent, with the large number of scene veterans working in corresponding studios and production companies bearing witness to this.
However, even the relatively passive immersive media experience of 360 videos has yet to catch on with the demoscene. XR's unique potential and affordances regarding in- and output, including multimodal interaction or volumetric audio, remain largely untapped.
In this talk, I will discuss the differences, commonalities, and creative potential of XR as a platform, as already explored, for instance, by major contemporary artists and others.
