Anna Broinowski
Biography
Dr Anna Broinowski is a Tokyo-born, Walkley-winning filmmaker, author and researcher who documents countercultural subjects. Her documentaries frequently use VFX and have screened globally, consistently reaching audiences over one million. They include Aim High in Creation! (about North Korean cinema), Forbidden Lie$ (about hoax-author Norma Khouri) and Hell Bento!! (about 1990s subcultures in Japan) and have won three AACTAs, Best Film at Silverdocs USA, the Writer’s Guild of America Best Nonfiction Screenplay, the Rome Film Festival Cult Prize and a NSW Premier’s Literary Award. Anna has presented guest lectures and masterclasses at Princeton, Yale, Columbia and Seoul Universities; at the Rotterdam and St Petersburg Film Festivals; and at the Sydney Opera House Festival of Dangerous Ideas. She has written three books, The Director is the Commander (Penguin), Please Explain: the Rise, Fall and Rise again of Pauline Hanson (Penguin/Random House) and Datsun Angel (Hachette); and is Documentary Vice-President on the Australian Director’s Guild Board. As Director of the Master of Film and Screen Arts and Senior Lecturer at Sydney University, Anna researches documentary, synthetic media and deepfakes.
